Presence Film
The acclaimed director tests his directorial skills with this innovative ghostly tale filmed completely from the viewpoint of the spirit. As a family featuring mother Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe moves into their recent residence, the lens – representing the ghost – follows them around. The teen shows signs of conscious of the ghostly being, and it looks like defensive toward her. However, the motive remains? This is an entertaining concept that doesn't outstay its welcome, with a twist you might not see coming. Saturday 11 October, afternoon and evening times, Sky Cinema

The Black Phone
The director's contained scarefest stands strong without requiring a continuation. Taking place in 1970s Colorado, a series of child abductions has rendered the children on edge. Once Finney is taken by “the Grabber” and imprisoned in a dungeon, he fears a terrible outcome. Yet the non-functional line on the wall repeatedly calls, with spooky callers offering help, while the intuitive nightmares of his sister Gwen may be his salvation. A solid creepfest. October 11th, 10.50pm, on Film4
This Dramatic Portrait
In the conflict between spirituality and money, the winner is obvious for Mammon in this director's wonderfully garish true story about the fallen televangelist plus her lawbreaking partner. Andrew Garfield plays the venal Jim, who declares early on, asserting religious justification for riches. He and Tammy Faye set about capitalizing on the people's Christian beliefs. It's an extravaganza of tacky decor, excessive cosmetics and hypocrisy, though Chastain achieves to present the character in a likable light. Tuesday 14 October, early morning, Film4
